When besieging, the attacking commander will be the one of highest rank. In battle, some of their flank commanders may be chosen to lead a flank of your combined armies, even if you have a far more competent commander leading your troops on this flank. Keep in mind though that relying on allies to win a war can jeopardise your chances to win it. By declaring tributary wars on smaller, peripheric states, you will be able to constitute a large zone of influence faster than by conquering them one by one, allowing you to take on your enemy with greater peace of mind. With Jade Dragon, the tributary system also allows for easy alliance forming. Be mindful though that an ally making war by himself is useless for yours, as his troops will be busy elsewhere. With their support and very large armies, losing the war will be very hard. The Holy Roman Emperor or the Caliph are the best examples. If you are not ready to attack by yourself a larger realm, consider making an alliance with prominent members of your religious group. When a Casus Belli is found, here comes war.
